We are a group of friends who love walking in the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, theHowgills and other local areas.

Our present ages range between 50 and 70 (approximately).

Anyone interested in joining us is more than welcome to meet us on Morecambe Promenade, opposite the junction with Lansdowne Road, near the high rise block of flats called Lakeland House, at 9am on alternate Sunday mornings.

We travel to the walk starting points in our own vehicles which we share, giving the driver £4 towards his petrol costs. We have a varied social life including Club dinners at Christmas and other occasions, BBQ's at members houses, we form teams at pub quizes and we organize walking holidays within the UK and in Europe.

14th December 2006

Our annual Christmas Dinner was held at the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Beetham, when 20 members of the club enjoyed a wonderful meal which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

16th December 2007
Once again, owing to popular demand, we held our Christmas Dinner at the Wheatsheaf Hotel at Beetham. This year we had 24 members enjoying a meal fit for a king with a little entertainment from Liz and yours truly.

2nd - 5th May 2008
Once again Alan devoted much of his time preparing the way for other members of the club to have a good time walking and socialising in unfamiliar terratory. This year he decided that we should occupy a cottage in Kinlochleven, Scotland.
Friday
Evening saw 10 of us congregate with 2 others taking accommodation in the village. Barbara prepared an evening meal, beer and wine flowed in quantity, then laughter filled our small kitchen/diner until bedtime.
Saturday
Four of the men rose early and climbed 3 munros, namely, Binnein Beag, Binnein Mor and Na Gruagaichean before having a break for lunch. It was then that someone suggested that, as it was only 1.30pm, it would be a shame to waste the afternoon by going back down, and other peaks were invitingly close. The suggestion seemed non-too appealing to me and I returned to base rather wearily. The others continued up Stob Coire a'Chairn and beyond.
Our 'B' party spent the day wandering the lower hills around Kinlochleven before we all met back at the cottage for a splendid evening meal prepared by our own Delia Smith, Ayls, followed by our own brand of nightly entertainment.
Sunday
Breakfast consumed, our 3-man 'A' party en route for more peak-bagging, the rest of us, including our Scottish contingent, Rob & Trish with canine pets, Roy and Meg, were transported to the head of Glencoe to walk a section of the West Highland Way back to Kinlochleven. With the Devil's Staircase conquered and almost half the walk completed, once again the question was asked if it was early enough to extend the walk to the dam of the Blackwater Reservoir. For once I succumbed and 4 of us left the party to walk up the pipeline to the dam before returning on the path following the River Leven to the village. Again it was an evening to savour with Pauline providing the main meal accompanied by Trish's nice pear in a crumble. Unfortunately, the comedy spluttered a little this evening.

I would like to add that Bob ("Two Hats") Hill did a historical (or was it hysterical) rendition of Health & Safety issues in the time of Nelson. The debate between a frustrated Nelson and a lisping, bureaucratic Hardy was instructional and hilarious - Julian.

Monday
Breakfast, pack and clean before all but 3 departed for home ground. Alan, Ayls and Judy stayed on to walk and view a waterfall before travelling to cross the border.
Our thanks go out to Alan for organising the trip, to the ladies who kept our stomachs filled with fabulous food and to all who had an input in the weekends entertainment. The Equity Cards are on the way.

Thursday 17th Dec 2009
The annual Xmas dinner was at Q.S.F. on St george's Quay, Lancaster. 23 attendees, we had a really ecellent and tasty meal. Liz regaled us at the end of the evening with one of her famous(notorious) monologues even after she was expressly forbidden to do so by the chairman and committee. Even the imploring of ALL gathered revellers and the constant heckling failed to make her cease, and she continued doggedly to the end. Our ears will eventually recover but will our tortured minds?

Sunday 18th April

Liz & Mavis led the walk (a good turn out of 15 souls + 1dog), starting from Settle centre, through Giggleswick then over the Quarry top and down into the Ribble valley. The weather started cloudy but within one hour had turned into a cloudless blue sky for the rest of the day. Followed the Ribble valley upstream to Stainforth Force for lunch by the falls. Suitably refreshed set off back to Settle across the top of stainforth Scar. Refreshments partaken of in a pub in Settle town centre.

Sunday 3rd May

9 participents on this the, section 1 of Bobs "Ribble Way" extravaganza, Longton -Preston. Weather cloudy with sunny periods and a brisk wind coming off Morecambe Bay. Started in open country walking up on top of the man-made flood banks beside the Ribble but soon got into the green belt that runs up the river all the way through Preston. Finish more or less in the Eastern centre of Preston. Beers in the Bridge Inn in Preston.

Sunday 17th May

7 of us set out on part 2 of the Ribble way challenge, Preston to Ribchester.
Weather cloudy but dry. Out into open farming countryside now still following flat course along the river bank & under the M6. Then a short but steep slippery ascent onto a wooded plateu. The rain started to pour down so we sheltered in the wood and halted for lunch. Rain soon stopped so onwards and downwards back to the river, along an old roman road and into Ribchester. Beers partaken of in the White Bull ? in Ribchester.

Sunday 31 st May

Glorious sunny day for Brians walk. 8 walkers started fom Sadgillup Longsneddale valley (watched the mountain rescue team exercise on the crags to our left) to Little Harter Fell and Harter Fell. Warm climb but a cooling breeze at the top.Lunch on Harter Fell with a splendid view of Haweswater in the bottom.
Followed the ridge back down to Kentmere Pike and Shipman Knotts (Bobs fishy connection ???). Then back to the bridleway at the bottom and return to Sadgill car park.

Sunday 14th June

Cyril leading with help from Bob. 8 walkers started. This was 3 ascents in one walk, starting from the Kirkstone Inn straight up Red Screes. Bob & Gordon climbed up Kirkstone Chimney, 3 of us up an easier gully and the rest up the path. Dove Crag next via Scandale Pass then on to Hart Crag. Finally down Hartsop above How to Brothers Water. Leaving a car at Brothers Water for the drive back to Kirkstone was a very welcome choice.

Sunday 28th June

A lovely sunny warm dayfor the 3rd section of the Ribble Way, Ribchester to Clitheroe. Delayed start due to broken car and the 3 of us took the wrong path. Eventually we all re-grouped for lunch. A pleasant relatively flat section , quite a lot of road work away from the river. Just made it back to Clitheroe car park when the heavens opened.

Sunday 12th July

A damp start for 5 of us on Geoffs walk in the Howgills. Start from Rawthey Bridge and up the valley to the spectacular waterfall above Rawthey Gill Quarry. The weather had now improved and the sun was breaking through ocassionally.Then back down and across the main road up to Wandale down to the Cross Keys temperance ' pub ' and then back to the car. Refreshments taken at the Dalesman public house in Sedbergh

Sunday 19th July

Tiny turnout of just 2 for this walk (Brian & Marjorie). Started at Aira Force car park then alongside Ullswater toYew Crag, Gowbarrow Fell and Airy Crag. Onward to Priest Crag and Underbarrow. Then return via Lowthwaite, Ulcat Row and past Dockray to return to car park via Aira Force. The weather was superb much better than the forecast.
Stopped at Patterdale Hotel for a beer on the way home.

Sunday 9th August

Six people set off from Torver for Cyrils attack on Dow Crag. The weather at first was cloudy but then the sun came out by lunchtime. 4 intrepid souls took the steep ascent up South Rake and 2 took the safer way round by Goats Hause to meet for a lunch stop on Dow Crag.
After lunch descended by Brown Pike and White Maiden, then followed Ash Gill beck back to the cars.

Sunday 30th August

Just Dave Hugill and Cyril turned up for this one. Had the weather been kinder this woiuld have been a great walk. From Pendragon Castle up Wild Boar Fell & Swaithefell, then down and across the Settle-Carlisle railwayto take the Old High Way (Lady Anne's Way) back up Mallerstang Valley.

Sunday 6th Sept

Liz's walk from Settle to Malham and return. 3 walkers for this event started from Settle town centre. Weather cloudy but dry for a change. Up across the foot of Langcliffe Scar to Capon Hall. Skirted Malham Cove with views Of Malham Tarn, then back to Langscar Gate. Return to Settle via Nappa Cross (a stone cross built into the drystone wall) and Stockdale Lane. On entering Settle town we visited the smallest Art Gallery in the World (ask Liz). Weather stayed fine all walk with a few sunny spells.

Sunday 20th Sept
5 of us set out on this part 5 of the Ribble Way, Gisburn - Settle. Started from Gisburn Auction Mart on a brilliant sunny morning.
This part of the Way mostly meanders away from the Ribble and it was 6 miles later at Cow Bridge ,near Long Preston when we saw it again. Then another 5 mile loop without sight of it until it was spotted again 1 mile south of Settle. The last mile was along the bank into Settle centre. End of days beer was partaken in the evening sunshine at the White Hart Inn at Giggleswick.

Sunday 4th Oct
Cyrils walk round Furness Abbey and Dalton area was led by Marjorie as Cyril was unable to attend.Weather was warm and sunny with an occasional shower. Started from the splendid venue of Furness Abbey car park. Along the Abbey beck to Bow bridge then up over the top of farmland toDendron church. Headed North to Dalton, again by farmland tracks and paths. Lunch was taken in a coucil estate childrens playground (first time for this type of lunch stop for most of us) as it was the first place with any seating for the previous 4 miles. Descended the hill into Dalton town centre then back along the valley bottom to Furness Abbey. Tea and sticky buns fom the teashop in the car park.

Sunday 18th Oct
Bob led 5 souls on the penultimate section of the Ribble Way, Settle to Horton in Ribblesdale. Pity it was rather drizzly after such a glorious week prior. The high spot was lunch in a culvert under the Settle to Carlisle railway line.
Refreshments were partaken of at the Crown Inn at Horton in R.

Sunday 1st Nov
Final part of Ribble Way cancelled due to inclement weather, high winds & torrential rain forecast all day.

Sunday 15th Nov
Seven participant for peters walk, started in the village of Askham, up to Lowther Park then followed the river upstream to Whale farm.
Across the River Lowther and up on to Moor Divock, over to The Cockpit to see the stone circle. Down towards Pooley Bridge and cut back over the top to Winder Hall Farm and back to Askham. Weather was mixed with sunshine & showers but mainly fair. Beer in Queens Head in Askham.

Sunday 29th Nov
Six brave soul set out on a wet & windy morning to the start at Wray Castle on the shores of Windermere. A week after the biggest floods for many years and the Lake District was showing the scars. Walked along the lake shore and then cut inland through High Wray and the forestry to ascend Latterbarrow from the west side(weather improving, almost stopped raining). Then down off Latterbarrow into Hawkshead where lunch was taken in a nice dry bus shelter. From Hawkshead we headed back towards Wray Castle via High Tock How and Blelham Tarn.
Beer in the Watermill Inn at Ings on the drive home.

Sunday 6th Dec
A select group of 3 set out for this walk. Due to wet weather yet again it was decided to cut out Harter & Little Harter Fell for the better path up to Green Bell. Weather took a turn for the worse as the summit approached (driving hail)but stopped long enough for a lunch stop. The rain returned for the descent, only stopping as the Ravenstonedale finish was approached. The day was completed with a pint in The Cross Keys in Tebay.
